Formula One High-Velocity, High Excitement in Austin

Austin is pulling out all the stops this weekend, as we host Championship Formula One Racing at Circuit of the Americas. As part of the Grand Prix celebration, there’s three days of mind-blowing auto racing, a college sport spectacular, our biggest street fair of the year, and enough live music to take you all the way to Christmas.

Formula One racing at Circuit of the Americas

The US Grand Prix takes center stage Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with Ferrari Challenge and Formula One practice runs on Friday, November 15. Saturday features more Formula One practice runs, qualifying races for Ferrari Challenge, three sessions of Formula One qualifiers, and official first races for Ferrari Challenge qualifiers and Formula Vintage competitors.

The excitement builds on Sunday, November 16, as the day begins with the second Formula Vintage and Ferrari Challenge races. A little later in the morning, it’s the Formula One Drivers’ Parade, and at 1:00 the frenzy reaches its adrenaline-packed peak as the US Grand Prix Formula One race begins. Featured teams for this year’s race include last year’s champion, Infiniti-Red Bull Racing, perennial favorites Ferrari, Lotus, and McLaren, and up-and-comers Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Clash of the titans at UT

Adding to the already electric weekend madness, there’s a classic college football rivalry in the spotlight on Saturday afternoon. The University of Texas Longhorns (#24 in the BCS standings) take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys (#12 in the BCS standings) at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. This promises to be a great game — but if you don’t have your tickets already, you might be watching it with hundreds of other fans in a local pub.

Party outdoors at Fan Fest

Still not enough excitement for you? No problem. As part of the US Grand Prix festivities, we’re also hosting our biggest street party of the year — Austin Fan Fest. Packed with interactive displays, food and beverages, games, rides, and a special Kids’ Zone, admission to Fan Fest is free. The gates to 12 square blocks of family fun open at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 14 and noon on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Fan Fest closes at midnight on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday night.

Music all over town

Of course, it wouldn’t be Austin without some live music — and there’s plenty of it this weekend. The outdoor Fan Fest features 61 live bands performing on 6 stages over four days. Special performances at Austin City Limits feature The Best of Texas Music Friday night, and Sting on Saturday night. If you happen to be at the racetrack Sunday following the finish of the US Grand Prix, Pitbull is performing a free concert for racing fans. For those who prefer their music mixed by DJs, Six Lounge is hosting a Silent Disco (headsets only) on Friday and Saturday night.

This weekend is the perfect opportunity for a unique corporate getaway or family weekend vacation in Austin. If you’re considering joining us, give yourself a break and get past the crowds, the traffic, and the closed-off streets the stress-free way.
